Final Music Video

Final Website

Digipack Final

This is the final version of our digipack that we have edited in accordance with the feedback we received from others in our class. The entire thing has had the brightness increased because when printed off, a lot of the areas that seemed fine on the computer were too dark to even see on paper. we have also slimmed down the spines slightly and lined up the text better so that they would fit within the dimensions needed to fit into an actual CD. The text on the bottom middle panel has been altered again, now with a different type face and we have moved around some of  the text to fit in with the composition of the mountain behind it better. The top right has also been changed so that the image takes up the whole of the square as before if was too small and there was a black line where it didn't feel the image. The top left has also bee refined as people said they didn't like how the pixel effect looked on the image as it didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the pack so we stripped the image back down to it's original state, copied the two doors over to make it symmetrical and added all the other glowing effects to it to get the look we wanted before but this time without the pixelated effect.

Evaluation: Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

A music video is created to promote a single/album performed by an artist/band. It helps create and adapt the star image of the band or artist and is designed with the intention of entertaining the audience. It puts a visual meaning to compliment the song by using images, also it can show us if there is any narrative to the song. A music video can be a combination of live performance, narrative and other visual image such as graphics and animations.

Performance
For indie rock bands, performance is a key element in their music video to show off their skills and energy, using performance attracts their target audience to their live shows. in some cases an indie music video would have both a performance and narrative element.

'Hold back the river' by James Bay in a performance music video, simply because it shows James playing his guitar in one location, he is accompanied by other instruments forming a band, this really highlights the type of genre he is playing which is indie, this is also demonstrated by the clothes he is wearing and also the colour of the video, the colour is quite dark but very simple. The video has a lot of close-ups of James which presents the theory of star image. The use of this shows that he is all about performance and getting his music across through simple presenting. Also the clothes that he is wearing are clothes that he would wear at a gig/concert, he is showing his true image through the video.

Narrative
A narrative used in an indie music video is usually very different to a narrative used in a pop video, they are usually less bright and more deep, and the actual video itself tend to have a more cinematic feel. Narrative is key to representing and explaining the song in a visual way.

'Why'd you only call me when you're high?' by Arctic Monkeys is a narrative video, it has a much more deeper meaning than say for example a video that Taylor Swift would produce. The lighting
and the atmosphere of the video highlights that it is an indie band, also the clothing the artists are wearing also presents this. The use of this narrative really shows us a clear story of the song and it presents it in a cinematic feel which is a key convention for a indie band video. Even though it shows no performance aspects, it still gives the song an indie feel and would still encourage people to go their gigs because of the mise-en-scene they have incorporated into the video.

Conventions

From looking at the general conventions of an indie band, we decided to do a mix of both performance and narrative in our music video, cutting from performance shots to narrative shots using the actual artists in the story (Katie and Marcus). We decided to go for a casual look in both aspects of the video, similarly to The Kooks as all of the other bands we researched have a very dark emo look and we didn't want to come across as too Gothic or dark.

These two pictures show the look we wanted our band to look like, on the left is a picture in a natural setting with just casual clothing and the picture on the right is us wearing casual clothing but because of the filter and editing we done on the picture, it portrays us to be more of an indie band, so we used a mix of photos to illustrate us a band.

We challenged this concept of a typical drug, alcohol, partying
narrative and used a relationship theme. Our lyrics relate to our narrative in a hidden way, such as 'and you could see it change', this relates to the breakdown of the relationship and the breakdown of Marcus and this is shown in the flashbacks of Marcus on his own,
showing that Marcus on his own. 'tell me your favourite things' this could be seen as a 'cute' lyric as it could insinuate the couple bonding and this is shown through the flashbacks of Marcus and Katie having fun in various locations.

We supported the theory of thought beats, the obvious factor being instruments, when we recreated a gig like setting using drums, guitars, and microphones, this shows the relationship between the music and the visuals, this also portrays our genre of indie. We tried to cut the shots on different sections of the song.
In terms of close ups, we supported this to a certain extent as we showed a lot of closeups of the main vocalist (Marcus) and we showed a few of Katie and Max but because we are a band, our main focus was getting wide, establishing shots of the whole band to show our image as a whole.

                 Website
This is our Homepage of our website, we looked at Arctic Monkeys as our main influence for the
website as they are a very popular band and their website's use of 'classic' black and white is stereotypical of the genre. Realising that our audience often use the internet, we wanted to make our band stand out so we challenged a lot of their conventions. From looking at Arctic Monkeys we decided we didn't want to make our website bland by using two set colours like they have used. It makes it less interesting which is why we decided to use a more
vibrant but almost dark at the same time purple.  This was then used throughout our ancillary tasks. They're colours that make the website more aesthetically pleasing but also promote our genre of indie because they aren't too outgoing.  The connotations of royalty also don't differ to much from the 'classical' connotations of black and white.

We followed the conventions of a web homepage by using the same links and tabs, however we made our tab bar more visible for our viewers so they can navigate round our page easily, instead of having links on the right side we decided to have a twitter feed to promote our band on social media due to the uses and gratifications theory idea that the audience want to get something out of the media. We also decided to have a gallery on our homepage to show our image clearly.

DigiPack
We looked at the 1975’s digipak and straight away it looked quite plain but the way they’ve used
effects using black and white is quite cool, they’ve used two of them pictures with different writing on them, their CD is quite boring however the font style they’ve used is interesting and makes it look less tedious. They’ve featured the song names on the back of their digipak.

We also looked at imagine dragons digipak, from the front cover, we can tell that indie bands digipaks are a lot more symbolic and imaginative. The colours used on it aren't too boring and they link with the suspense and mystery of the album. The colours link in with the name of their album 'night visions' This makes the name more memorable as people can link it back to the main image. They have used the same font throughout all their text making it more recognizable. The band name is quite small and could be made bigger to make it more visible. The other two pictures are quite simple and only two colours are used, the back could be more exciting but again the song names are shown which we will have to include on ours.

For our digipak we decided to both develop and challenge the conventions of other digipaks, We used symbolic and imaginative pictures like the others have used and in some cases even drew pictures of the mountain range to go along with the band name.  We developed them by editing the pictures on photoshop to make them look more unique. We followed conventions of the arrangement by putting the name of our songs on the back, we developed this by using them on a picture of a guitar to make it less tedious. We used the same colours and fonts that we have used throughout our ancillary texts to make it recognizable. We challenged the researched digipaks by using a lot more colour to make it stand out more and we also used pictures of the band itself to show people who we are. We made our band name very visible on two of our pictures. The mountain photo we used represents our name of 'summit' which runs throughout all of our products.
